Ingrown Toenail Care and Assessment

Support for uncomfortable nail edges

An ingrown toenail happens when the edge of a nail presses into or grows into the surrounding skin. The toe may feel tender, particularly when wearing shoes or walking. Some ingrown nails can also become inflamed or infected.

At Local Foot Care, our qualified Foot Health Practitioners can assess nail discomfort and provide appropriate routine nail care during home visits in Crowthorne and surrounding areas. We explain what is suitable within our scope and when a podiatrist or GP should assess the toe.

What happens at a nail-care appointment?

We look at the nail and surrounding skin, ask about how long the symptoms have been present and consider relevant medical conditions. For suitable mild problems, routine nail-edge care may be possible. We do not promise that every ingrown nail can be treated at home; some need podiatry assessment and possibly a procedure.

When to seek prompt medical advice

If the toe has spreading redness, increasing swelling, pus, fever or severe pain, arrange prompt medical assessment. If you have diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation or a weakened immune system, do not delay getting advice for a sore or inflamed toe.

Frequently asked questions

Can you remove an ingrown toenail?

We offer assessment and suitable routine nail care, including limited nail-edge care where appropriate. More complex or infected ingrown nails may need an HCPC-registered podiatrist or other clinician.

Should I cut down the side of the nail myself?

Avoid digging into the nail edge or cutting deeply into the corner, as this can worsen injury. Seek advice if the nail is painful.

I searched for an ingrown toenail chiropodist. Can I book with you?

You can contact Local Foot Care to discuss routine ingrown-nail care. We are Foot Health Practitioners rather than HCPC-registered chiropodists or podiatrists, and will advise on referral where needed.
